Ultrasound procedure

Getting ready for your ultrasound scan

Mostly no special preparation is needed. We call before your scan and provide any specific instructions, like fasting, for example, if you are having an abdominal scan. We will email this information too. Please let us know if you have any medical conditions, such as diabetes, where you need to eat immediately after your scan. Also, let us know any medications you are taking.

Please wear loose clothing. The sonographer will explain the procedure to you and gain your consent before starting. Depending on the scan, you may be asked to remove your clothing. You may be positioned sitting, standing or lying down for your ultrasound scan. A thin layer of gel is applied to the area. The gel improves image quality by enhancing the transmission of sound waves through the skin. You may feel slight pressure. Your scan takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the area being examined.

The images and sonographer’s diagnostic report are sent to our specialist team for review. A report, with recommendations, is sent to your General Practitioner, your Specialist or your Allied Health Professional eg , Nurse Practitioner, physiotherapist. A copy of the report will be sent to you or will be available for you on Manage My Health. The pictures and the report of the ultrasound scan will be stored electronically.

What are the two types of ultrasound scan?

External ultrasound

On the outside of your body, following the application of ultrasound gel, the probe moves over the skin in area being scanned.

Internal ultrasound

Our female sonographers will insert the ultrasound probe into your body via your vagina. You have the option of doing this yourself. During the examination the probe is gently moved around to look at your pelvis. You are likely to feel some pressure, which will only last for a short time.
